TOP TRAVELLERS’ QUERY

I am looking for opinions on this trip for mid February. My family and I are planning to travel from Delhi to Nainital, spend 2 or 3 nights there and drive to Kausani for 1 or 2 nights, Ranikhet 1 night, Corbett 3 nights, Haridwar 2 nights and back to Delhi. We will have a car and driver and we do go skiing in Australia so we are prepared for the cold. My questions are: Will the roads be passable from Nainital to Kausani? Should we spend the 3 nights in Nainital and 1 in Kausani or 2 nights each? — Belinda

Reply:

Though the roads are good and well connected, take a midsize car or SUV for better manoeuvring. Nainital is a beautiful hill station, with an old world charm. You can stay for 2 nights in Nainital and 1 night in Garh-Mukteshwar. Kausani and Ranikhet - 1 night each is enough. Corbett and Haridwar - 2 nights each are enough.

SIGHTSEEING HIGHLIGHTS

The quaint hill station of Kausani offers several vantage points from where you can enjoy the views of several Himalayan peaks, such as Trishul, Nanda Devi and Nandakot. The area near the state bungalow at Kausani is one such viewpoint.

Anashakti Ashram is Kausani’s landmark where Mahatma Gandhi stayed. Once a tea estate, the ashram has now been converted into a research centre and a library. A Gandhi Memorial statue, erected in the ashram, is the place where the evening prayers are conducted daily.

Baijnath and Bageshwar temples are just a few hours’ driving distance away from the town. You can also make Kausani your base and visit the other destinations of this region, such as Ranikhet, Almora, Binsar and Multeshwar.

Pine and oak trees cover the hills around Kausani. The area is dotted with apple, peach and pear orchards, inspiring you to go for long walks. The town can also be a starting point for treks such as Adi Kailash Trek, Base Kausani Trek and the Bageshwar Sunderdhanga Trek.

REVIEW

Kausani is a quiet little holiday destination in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. It offers breath-taking views of the Himalayan range.Approximately, a 350 km view of the Himalayan ranges, pure and pristine, is visible to the naked eye. Mahatma Gandhi had correctly described this place as ‘Switzerland of India’.

There isn’t much opportunity to indulge in so-called sightseeing. The Anashakti Ashram, where Mahatma Gandhi spent a few days, is open for public. It is a historic monument of sorts where one can view Gandhian history and his ways of living. Again, the view of the Himalayan range is just spectacular from here. The Baijnath temple located at 22 km from Kausani, is a must visit for the religious minded. The temple architecture, combined with the serene backdrop can be a soothing balm to the soul. There is no local market as such. A few shops are clustered in an area called the Mall road.

The only activity suggested is relaxing and resting. Doing anything other than healing your body and soul while taking in the majestic splendours of the mountains and nature, is a criminal waste of time!
We visited Kausani from Nainital and it was a four-hour drive through pleasant roads. However, if you are not accustomed to winding roads, it is advisable to take nausea medication beforehand. Kausani can be reached by road from Delhi, or by a few hours’ drive from Kathgodam railway station. The temperature was average when we visited in March end, but it is advisable to carry light woollen clothes, as it can get pretty cold in the evenings and nights. Happy Holiday!!
